A real example, start to finish
JPG is the most common picture format, and the hardest one to stitch well. Every time a JPG is saved, it blurs the edges and adds faint blocks of off-color pixels. A stitch file made straight from those pixels gets ragged edges and stray specks of thread.
BobbinBot cleans the JPG before it digitizes. It finds the few real colors in the picture, snaps every pixel to one of them, and smooths the edges, so the DST follows the shapes you meant rather than the compression. The example below is a deliberately poor JPG, saved at low quality, so you can see what the cleanup does.
A pink flower with a yellow middle, saved as a low-quality JPG with blocky edges.
A real run of the engine on this picture. The stitched picture is a simulation, not a photo of thread.
Three steps
- 1 Upload the JPG
A drawing, a logo, or a scan, up to 8 MB. A screenshot or a phone picture of paper works too. Pick what you are sewing on.
- 2 Compare before and after
See the original next to the cleaned version and the stitch simulation. If the cleanup changed the picture, it says what changed. Then read the verdict.
- 3 Download the DST
Sign in with your email. The DST comes first; the zip holds PES, JEF, EXP, VP3 and the rest, and the sew-out kit for the first try.
Pictures that work, and ones that don't
Thread sews flat color in shapes that need room. The verdict checks this for you, but it helps to start with the right picture.
Sews well
- JPGs of flat art: logos, drawings, flowers, simple shapes
- The biggest version of the JPG you have, not a thumbnail
- A plain background behind the subject
- Clear color differences between neighbouring shapes
Not a good fit
- Photos of people, pets or landscapes: shading sews as blocks, so expect yellow or red
- Tiny JPGs where a shape is only a few pixels wide
- Pictures with text that will be under about 5 mm tall once sewn
- Pictures you do not have the rights to
Machines that read DST
From the makers' published specs, these machines on our list read DST:
- Baby Lock Meridian 2
- Bernina 500 E
About DST
DST, short for Tajima's format, holds needle moves, jumps, trims and color stops, and no thread colors. That keeps it readable on almost any commercial machine, so it is the file shops usually ask for.
Because the colors are not in the file, the machine's screen may not match the design. Load the threads in the order the sew-out kit lists.

Upload the JPG here and pick the item. BobbinBot cleans the JPEG noise, digitizes the picture and writes a DST. You see the verdict before you pay, and the first design is free.
Why does JPG embroidery come out fuzzy?
JPG compression blurs edges and adds faint off-color blocks. Digitized as they are, they become ragged edges and stray stitches. BobbinBot snaps the picture to its real colors first.
Is JPG or PNG better for embroidery?
PNG, when you have the choice, because it keeps clean edges. A good JPG works fine after cleanup. A small or heavily compressed JPG loses detail that cannot come back.
Can I make a Tajima DST from a flower picture?
Yes. Flowers with a few solid petal colors sew well. A photo of a real flower, with soft shading, will sew as flat patches of color and usually gets a yellow.
Does the DST work on my home machine?
Some home machines read DST, such as the Bernina 500 E and the Baby Lock Meridian 2. If yours reads another format, it is in the same download.
What if the cleanup changes my picture?
It never does so silently. The page shows the original and the cleaned version side by side and lists what changed, so you can judge it before you pay.
