A real example, start to finish

PES is the file Brother and Baby Lock home machines read. Unlike some formats, it also stores the thread colors, so your machine's screen shows the design the way it will sew.

BobbinBot turns your PNG into a PES. It reduces the picture to colors from the Brother embroidery thread range, picks fill and satin stitches for each shape, sizes them for your item and hoop, and checks the result before you see it. The PES you download lists the same Brother thread names as the sew-out kit.

A real run of the engine on this picture. The stitched picture is a simulation, not a photo of thread.

What the verdict said about this picture

  • Some parts are too small for thread.

Three steps

  1. 1 Upload your PNG

A drawing, a logo, or clip art you own. Pick the item: a tote, a T-shirt, a towel. Pick your Brother or Baby Lock model to fit its hoop.

  2. 2 Check the stitches

See the flat colors with their Brother thread names, a stitch simulation, the stitch count and the size. The verdict says if anything needs changing.

  3. 3 Put the PES on your machine

Sign in with your email and download. Copy the PES to a USB stick, or send it with the app your machine uses, and load it like any other design.

Pictures that work, and ones that don't

Thread sews flat color in shapes that need room. The verdict checks this for you, but it helps to start with the right picture.

Sews well

  • Simple drawings and logos with a few solid colors
  • Shapes at least a few millimetres wide at the size you sew
  • Designs that fit your hoop, such as 100 × 100 mm on many entry machines
  • PNGs with a clear or plain white background

Not a good fit

  • Photos and soft shading: they get a yellow or a red, since thread sews flat color
  • Lettering smaller than about 5 mm tall once sewn
  • Designs bigger than your hoop: the verdict warns you before you pay
  • Pictures you do not have the rights to

About PES

PES is Brother's home embroidery format, and Baby Lock machines read it too. It stores the stitches, the color stops and the thread colors, so the screen matches the spools.

Some older Brother machines want PEC, the part of a PES that holds the stitches. It is in the zip with every download.

Questions

Short answers. More on the FAQ page.

All questions
How do I make a PES file from a PNG?

Upload the PNG here, choose your item and your Brother or Baby Lock model, and BobbinBot digitizes it into a PES. You see the verdict before you pay, and the first design is free.

Can you help me generate a PES file for embroidery?

Yes. Upload the picture or type a name, and BobbinBot writes the PES and checks it for long stitches, tiny stitches and dense fills before you download.

Which machines read PES?

Brother and Baby Lock home embroidery machines. Some other brands can import it too; the machine finder lists what each model reads.

How do I get the PES file onto my Brother machine?

Most models read a USB stick: copy the PES onto it and pick the design on the machine. Newer models can also receive designs by cable or the Brother app.

Will the colors match my Brother threads?

The colors come from the Brother embroidery thread range, and the sew-out kit lists each thread by name and number, in the order they sew.

What hoop size do I need?

It depends on the design. Pick your model and hoop in the form, and the design is sized to fit. If it cannot fit, the verdict says so before you pay.
